When Donald Sutherland was presented with an honorary Academy Award for a lifetime of great character acting in 2017, we’re pretty sure the topic of The Puppet Masters didn’t come up. A 1994 sci-fi horror flick based on a novel by the great Robert Heinlein, The Puppet Masters is an allegorical tale about paranoia, alien invasion, and the looming threat of mind control that stars a relatively young Sutherland as a CIA agent known as “The Old Man.” Interestingly, it’s oddly similar in many respects to 1978’s Invasion of the Body Snatchers , a prior film about alien mind control that starred Sutherland as an investigating health inspector, but very different from Castle of the Living Dead , a campy 1964 horror film that featured Sutherland as a guy called “The Old Man.” Lynchburg Underground Movie Club presents a screening of The Puppet Masters this evening at 7 p.m. at Riverviews Artspace (901 Jefferson St.). Tickets are $7. Click here for more info or call (434) 847-7277.
